The Navy YTB to ASD Conversion Program paved the way forward for the Navy to justify a design/build ASD Program to replace all YTB’s in NRNW. Again, Pacific Tugboat Service was selected in the late 2000’s as the Prime Contractor to design the first new ship assist tug fleet since the 1970’s. Pacific Tugboat Service was initially contracted to provide three ASD ship and submarine assist tugs based on a long list of required specifications. The outcome was a series of six “YT” tugs, designed by Robert Allen. When the first three tugs were delivered, and the quality and performance was demonstrated in the fleet, the Navy went on to order the next three in the series. Today, three YT’s are serving in NRNW and three are serving at the U.S. Navy base in Yokosuka, Japan. This approximately $60 million program has been a major success by all measures.
